Position Description – CIVIL DESIGNER
Taylor Engineering is currently searching for a well-rounded CIVIL DESIGNER to work in conjunction with and support the civil engineering department. This position assists with activities in engineering, design, and construction of civil engineering projects including by not limited to residential/commercial development projects and public municipal projects. This position conducts self-directed work in a team environment, and demonstrates the ability to work with minimal supervision, applies general engineering principles, and thinks analytically. Under supervision, this position provides support and assistance for engineering projects including assisting with planning, designing and specifications. This position entails the use of engineering software for modeling and drafting, and managing documentation and engineering files. Lastly, a Civil Designer is responsible for attending internal and external project meetings and performing field assignments as needed. This position requires 3-5+ years of experience, and candidates should be ready to become responsibly in charge of their work.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Utilize Civil 3D for project design, including:
    • plan and profiles of utilities
    • create and use pipe networks
    • roadway design
    • site grading and calculations
    • creation and use of labels
    • create and label alignments, parcels, and corridors
    • create feature lines and surfaces
    • manage, data reference, and interact with surfaces
    • edit parts and styles
    • catch basin sizing/spacing and minimum cover
    • manhole sizing/spacing and minimum cover
    • hydrant spacing
    • create waterlines in profile with deflection and exaggeration
  • Prepare and manage engineering plans and project documents
  • Evaluate engineering alternatives and resolve technical issues
  • Coordinate with review agencies, subconsultants, and clients
  • Make independent assessments of engineering problems and recommend solutions
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute work in a safe, timely, cost effective and compliant manner
  • Research and follow jurisdictional requirements unique to each project
  • Review and draft rough sketches, drawings, and redlines as provided by the Project Engineer or designer
  • Determine scale and perform mathematical calculations that require knowledge of geometry, algebra, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions
 
 
Supervision Received
This role will report to the Civil engineers. Close and frequent cooperation with firm ownership can be expected. Minimal daily supervision will be exercised with a great chance to grow both personally and professionally.
Qualifications
  • At least 4+ years of experience as a civil designer/draftsman, with 2+ years of experience in general civil engineering, including design of site grading, drainage, sanitary sewers, water systems, roadways, storm sewers and storm water management facilities.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D including areas described in the position duties and responsibilities
  • Confidence and capability in all aspects of design/production
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Thorough understanding of land development industry and the role of Civil Engineering within it.
