Mineral Area College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Jewell Wood Teacher Education Scholarship, made possible by a gift of more than $10,000 by the Joyce Wood Family. The scholarship celebrates the occasion of Jewell Wood's 100th birthday and honors her lifetime of contributions to students and her community.

Development and Alumni Relations Director Julia Dill said MAC is grateful for this scholarship fund. “This scholarship will allow education majors to follow in Ms. Wood's footsteps for years to come,” she said. “Her legacy in education will continue into the future, it’s a great gift she’s giving the community.”

The Jewell Wood Teacher Education Scholarship will provide scholarship assistance to an aspiring teacher each year, awarding $500 each semester to be applied to educational costs at MAC, including tuition, fees, required textbooks and classroom supplies, as well as College Park on-campus housing.

Jewell Wood graduated from Humansville High School in 1929, and received her BS in Education from Southeast Missouri State Teacher's College (now Southeast Missouri University) in 1937. She went on to complete master’s degree from Southeast in 1970. Wood taught hundreds of students through her career as an educator. In the 1930s, she taught first through fourth grades at Flemington School District. From the early 1950s to 1970, Joyce taught fourth graders at Bonne Terre Elementary, and in the 1970s, she helped students master reading as a remedial reading instructor at Bonne Terre Junior High.

Serving her community is also important to Wood, who has contributed her time and talents as a member of the Bonne Terre Library Auxiliary, Parkland Health Center Auxiliary, and the First Christian Church of Bonne Terre.
