Farmington Kiwanis Club Challenges Elementary School Students

Again this school year, the Farmington Kiwanis Club has challenged Farmington elementary students to develop better study habits and improve their grades. Approximately 600 students have the opportunity to set educational goals and earn small incentives throughout the year to celebrate their academic progress. Second quarter awards and recognitions were distributed with help from FHS Key Club members at Jefferson, Washington/Franklin, Roosevelt, and Lincoln schools. KEY Club is the high school version of Kiwanis International. Farmington High School’s KEY Club is very active and also helps to mentor the elementary students.

The Bring Up Grades program, BUG for short, is for fifth graders. Students are asked to set goals to maintain or improve their grades in core classes each quarter. The BUG program promotes goal setting which anchors the foundation to help students succeed in school and later in life. The program celebrates learning for all students--at every level--who continually work throughout the year to maintain or bring up their grades. Fifth graders enjoyed a special lesson about grade point averages (GPAs) and are now able to calculate their own GPAs.

The Terrific Kids program is designed for third graders and rewards students who are Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable. Third graders have a chance to set goals and earn recognition for positive work habits and good citizenship. Terrific Kids believe and achieve! Kiwanis views the Bring Up Grades and Terrific Kids programs as a method to reward improvements made in parental involvement, study habits and goal setting as well as simply the letter grades.

Farmington Kiwanis member Kim Amsden, who serves as ICC K-6 coordinator for the Farmington District and oversees these programs, comments, “Students who achieve their goals will be recognized by having their names added to the Bring Up Grades and Terrific Kids Honor Rolls and honored at the Student Achievement Awards ceremony in May to celebrate their accomplishments.”

“Because of the generosity of our local businesses, students who successfully complete the BUG and Terrific Kids programs will earn some incredibly cool incentives which can be used at school,” says Kiwanis member Peggy Ropelle, who is helping with the program organization. Farmington Kiwanis thanks and recognizes the following community-minded sponsors for their financial support of this year’s Bring Up Grades and Terrific Kids programs: Belgrade State Bank & Wise Grounds Coffee Shop, D & D Graphics, First State Community Bank, First Bank, Mineral Area College, Mineral Area Regional Medical Center, Ozarks Federal Savings & Loan, Raymond James Financial Services, and Seth A. Pegram, Attorney At Law.
