In two events, Mineral Area Council on the Arts will take armchair travelers and motorcycle enthusiasts on a trip around the world, through the eyes of a woman who captured her solo, global, motorcycle experience in photos.
The arts council will present Benka Pulko’s “Black and White Rainbow,”
a free photography exhibition covering her time spent among Tibetan children during her five-year, round-the-world motorcycle trip, in the lobby of First State Community Bank in downtown Farmington from Feb.
15-March 28. The exhibit is sponsored by First State and Mineral Area Council on the Arts, and is open to the public during the bank’s lobby hours.
Pulko will speak about her experience and show select photos from her entire global trip during the multimedia program, “One Woman, One Motorcycle, One World” at Long Memorial Hall in Farmington at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17. A limited number of $5 general admission seats are on sale at MAC’s Bookstore.
Slovenian-born Pulko, an award-winning writer and Slovenian Woman of the Year, had never driven motorcycle when she conceived the idea to traverse the globe on a two-wheeler. But within five months, she was packed for a trip that ultimately introduced her to 75 countries, earned her two entries in the Guinness Book of World Records, gave her 35,000 photos, and included five stitches and a 10-day stay in a hospital. (Her BMW motorcycle went through 19 tire changes and 10 chain sets.)
Arts council director Roxanne Cummings said she’s looking forward to the photography exhibition, and to meeting Pulko.
"Benka Pulko is a fascinating woman and her photography is stunning,”
she said. “The story of her trip around the world is the stuff of movies - and she took what she learned and started a charity to educate girls in developing countries. The arts council is thrilled that First State Community Bank helped us bring Benka's work to the Parkland."
