29th Annual Science Fair Sees New Twists

For the 29th spring in a row, the creative genius of the area’s math and science students will be on display at Mineral Area College’s Robert E. Sechrest Sr. Fieldhouse on March 23.
But there can’t be a math and science fair without great entries, and this year’s coordinator, MAC Assistant Science Professor Nancy Petersen, is encouraging all students inclined to math and science to enter by March 2.
“There’s no fee to enter the fair, but there IS a payoff for all students who participate,” she said. “The academic reward is apparent, of course, but each student also receives a certificate and a T-shirt that’s been designed by the previous year’s T-Shirt Design winner.”
She added that the top winning entries in the past have walked away with scholarships, cash prizes, certificates toward higher education classes, scientific equipment, and even a piece of a space shuttle.
Petersen said each student needs a sponsoring teacher to enter the fair, which is open to grades 6-12. The categories are Behavioral and Social Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Product Testing.
