Tailgating with free hotdogs, chips and drinks, meeting the Mineral Area College athletes and a chance to win free tuition for spring semester will be part of the evening’s fun during Mineral Area College’s annual Midnight Madness, which takes place beginning at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Robert E. Sechrest Sr. Field House. The evening is sponsored by MAC Athletics and MAC Student Activities.
Mike Overman, the community college’s athletic director, said Midnight Madness “stirs up the passion for MAC sports.”
“Midnight Madness is a great fall event on the MAC Campus,” he said. “We’ll be kicking off the sports year with an outstanding volleyball match against rival MSU-West Plains and an introduction to our men’s and women’s basketball teams.”
The evening is open to everyone. Tailgating, with grilled hotdogs, will be served in front of the Sechrest Field House at 5 p.m. The volleyball game against MSU West Plains begins at 6:30 p.m. After the game, the crowd will be introduced to the men’s and women’s basketball players, the cheerleaders and Kirby.
Other activities set for the night include a glimpse of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and three-point and slam dunk competitions that include a shot for someone to win free tuition for the upcoming spring semester. Over the course of the evening, MAC faculty and staff will also be collecting toiletries for the MAC food pantry at the front entrance of the Field House. All donated items will help MAC students that are in need.
“It’s one of the most exciting and fun-filled events this college offers,” Overman said. “The high energy level in the field house adds to the games and activities of the night. It’s gratifying to see the team members and crowd get all fired up about the upcoming basketball season, especially the little kids who will become our next generation of Cards fans."
