Mineral Area College’s student movie club, MACFlix, is offering free movies this spring in the Fine Arts Theater at the Park Hills campus.
MACFlix continues its 4th annual winter-spring film series on Saturday, March 25, with a free, widescreen presentation of the 1961, critically-acclaimed “Judgement at Nuremberg” at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater on the Park Hills campus. Admission is free to everyone. MACFlix presents all films in their original, large, widescreen format along with an outstanding sound system.
Set in Nuremberg in 1948, this film depicts a fictionalized version of the Judges' Trial of 1947, which was one of the 12 U.S. military tribunals during the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials.
The plot centers on a military tribunal led by an American chief trial judge, before whom four German judges and prosecutors stand accused of crimes against humanity for their involvement in atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. The film deals with non-combatant war crimes against a civilian population, the Holocaust, and examines the post-World War II geopolitical complexity of the actual Nuremberg Trials.
Dr. Kevin White, advisor to the MACFlix Club, said “Judgement at Nuremburg” boasts a huge cast in which each role was played by a major star.
“Many of the big-name actors who appeared in the film did so for a fraction of their usual salaries because they believed in the social importance of the project,” he said.
In 2013, Judgement at Nuremburg was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, with the Library of Congress deeming it "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The film, directed by Stanly Kramer, went on to be nominated for 11(!) Academy Awards. It is ranked in the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time.
The remaining MACFlix Classic Film Series includes:
Saturday, April 29, 7 pm “Rio Bravo;”
Saturday, May 6, 7 pm “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner;” and
Saturday, May 13, 7 pm “Twilight, Eclipse: Riffed Live, Unmercifully.”
White said the movies are digitally re-mastered and presented with an extremely, high-quality projector/sound system in a Theater environment. “The films shimmer beautifully on our specially-built widescreen, so the effect is like walking through a time machine and watching the movies in their very first weekend of release,” White said. “They're amazing to watch!”
