Marsalis to Play at MAC's Jazz Festival
Mineral Area College’s 26th Annual Jazz Festival will feature a member of one of the music world’s renowned families.
Delfeayo Marsalis, one of the top trombonists, composers and producers in jazz today, will perform in concert with MAC’s Jazz Ensemble and Kicks Band at Mineral Area College’s 26th annual jazz festival at 7:30 p.m., March 10, in the Mineral Area College Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $7 for students and music directors, $15 for adults, and should be purchased in advance at the Mineral Area College Bookstore, or by calling (573) 518] 2106.
MAC Music Instructor Michael Goldsmith said music lovers will thrill to the sounds at the MAC Fine Arts Theatre.
“What the audience will be hearing that night is not just one of the best trombonists alive today, but part of a music dynasty,” Goldsmith said. “The whole Marsalis family—Delfeayo and his brothers Branford, Wynton and Jason, as well as their father Ellis—earned the nation’s highest jazz honor, a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, in 2011.”
Goldsmith said Delfeayo has been called one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation, and Leonard Feather of the LA Times noted that Delfeayo is known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…”
For students who take part in the MAC Jazz Fest, Marsalis will present a master class at noon that Saturday, in addition to performing in the evening concert along with the Mineral Area College Jazz Ensemble and the Mineral Area College Kicks Band.
The Mineral Area College Jazz Festival was started in the mid-1980s. The foundation for the community college’s annual jazz festival was based on the hard work and commitment of MAC’s late music instructor, Carol Moore. The jazz festival was renamed in her memory after she passed away in 2008.
